Whilst working for G2, documentation was created in a very easy and concise manner.
 

Most of the documentation was created with the IT knowledge focus in mind, and the remainder was created for the purposes of the employees of the company to understand it from a lay-persons's point of view

File Valut Automation

When deploying Mac’s in an organization like G2, you want to automate as much as you can so that

new employees can get up and running on their first day in very little time.

G2’s IT department wanted to move towards “Zero Touch Provisioning”

. The only hurdle that we had to overcome was automating Solid State Drive encryption enablement without admin intervention.

Before I began working on this project the team tried their best to get FileVault enablement automated. After a while based on their initial research, I decided to take it upon myself to work on it.

Using my skills acquired through Jamf 200 certification as well as my previous experience using Jamf, I was able to draft an initial process.

I then created a script that allows SSD encryption to be enabled without IT admin intervention.

Weekly Reboot

A “Weekly Reboot” was implemented by IT to negate the issues of apps responding slowly,

processes stuck in a loop or taking up too much power. The existing process had an issue wherein, if the user had to choose any deferral other than “5 minutes” e.g. 1 hr then the user would be rebooted after 5 minutes and the user would be caught unaware.

With a “Weekly Reboot” we hope to solve this issue by checking if a Mac is more than 7 days online or running without a shutdown or a restart and thereby prompting the user to Restart their computer at that instance of receiving the prompt or after a certain deferral.

G2 IT - had a script and a process in place which successfully prompted the user, but the script did

not work if the end user chose a “deferral period of anything other than 5 mins”.

Power Management and Thermal Study

A deep research and dive was done where it was found that Intel Mac bower producing a large amount of heat when adapters and the power connector were connected near the processor side.

The fix was to distribute the connection on both sides, power adapter on the right USB-C and the peripherals on the right.

If only the Power adapter was connected that was not an issue

Assisted the network setup in Chicago G2 and Bangalore G2 Office

  • The Chicago network is served by 2x MS355-48X2 due to the sheer number of APs required for the office (each switch only has 24x mGig ports) as well as for failover redundancy.

  • The Chicago Wi-Fi is served up by 34x MR53 APs.

  • The Chicago network is further served by 18x MS225-48 switches for the access layer. This supports ethernet at the desk and in conference rooms

Autonaming of MacBook's

  • MacBook Names in G2 are set in a certain manner e.g. If the name is “Asher Menezes” the MacBook

  • Name would be “AMENEZES-MBP-AssetTagNumber”

  • This process has been done manually for every system. It takes around a couple of minutes per MacBook.

  • When the IT Team or an end user is setting up a Mac it is required that you accurately enter the “Full Name” of the user e.g. “Asher Jose Menezes”

  • To then set the naming convention you need to refer to the name once again and set it as described above.

  • The following commands would have to be entered into Terminal every time a Mac needed to be

  • named.

    • scutil set ComputerName AMENEZES-MBP-AssetTag

    • scutil set LocalHostName AMENEZES-MBP-AssetTag

    • scutil set HostName AMENEZES-MBP-AssetTag

  • This process from start to finish takes around 5-10 mins. However when you extrapolate that for multiple Mac’s, the amount of time spent for such a task adds up and there can always be the issue of an incorrect character or spelling mistake in the naming.
